The official RDG records set was derived electronically and objectively via the ThreadEx algorithm by the Applied Climate Information System (ACIS) which was developed and is maintained by NOAA Regional Climate Centers. Reading PA climate data exists within several data strings from which the official thread is comprised of selected substrings. The largest substring by far consists of official U.S. Weather Bureau data prior to May 1969. LPWB data fills the same Reading PA string from 1983 to present. NWS extended this string to capture as much LPWB snow data as ACIS rules would allow, mainly to complement the Reading Regional Airport (RDG) string which began February 1999. A certain ACIS rule permitted NWS to replace the Reading 4 NNW substring from December 1991 through January 1999 with the corresponding LPWB substring in the Reading PA string. This action corrected several clerical errors and adjusted to calendar day 24-hour periods during this interval. The erstwhile Reading 4 NNW data still exist but are no longer part of the official Reading PA thread. However, the substring between the Weather Bureau era and December 1991, still part of the official record, is riddled with numerous observational, clerical, and other kinds of errors. Further, this set is not an apples-with-apples comparison as daily observations during the above period ended early morning rather than around midnight as has been with the great majority of years. And this caused many high temperature records to chart the day after they actually occurred. Even more, the Weather Bureau of old did not include a stray fragment of temperature data during 1888 and 1889 as ThreadEx does. Continuous and reliable temperature data began 1898. Precipitation data began in 1869. Therefore, a second records set (Actual) was derived manually, with corrected data used for input, and all temperatures adjusted to calendar days. This actual set also includes complementary unofficial snow data. Media has been directed to use the official ThreadEx records set.
